Mellon Centre for Migration Studies

As part of your visit, you are welcome to explore our Mellon Centre for Migration Studies with its Irish Emigration Database and Library.

If what you see in the Outdoor Museum makes you want to find out more about any aspect of Irish migration, including the migration story of your own ancestors, do call into the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies or contact us from home.

Centre for Migration StudiesThe resources of the Centre are for you as well as for the museum curators and guides who greet visitors in the exhibit buildings. Our aim is to collect as much information as possible about the peoples of Ireland world-wide and to make it accessible to the public (click image to enlarge).

Our resources include the world’s leading specialist collection of books on Irish migration history and the Irish Emigration Database, which contains over 33,000 primary source documents that are free-text searchable. Passenger lists and emigrant letters are particularly popular with visitors for searching. Perhaps you may find an ancestor named among them.

Centre for Migration StudiesThe Centre’s Library is part of Libraries NI, Northern Ireland’s public library service. Internet access is available (free to members of Libraries NI) and you may print out or make photocopies of documents for a small charge.

Centre staff are available to assist visitors with enquiries. The Lecturer and Development Officer and Director, Patrick Fitzgerald and Brian Lambkin, are the authors of Migration in Irish History, 1607-2007 (Palgrave Macmillan 2008).
