Festivals & Celebrations

Click to enlarge: Christmas RymhersThe year’s round of changing seasons and of major festivals is studied and celebrated by the museum through its popular events programme and displays.

March 17, St Patrick’s Day, is now widely celebrated throughout the world, and is included in the museum’s programme. Historically, St Patrick’s Day was often considered an opportunity to relax the strict observation of Lenten fasting. Easter is also an important celebration, as are Christmas and Hallowe’en. Many such festivals, while important points of the Christian year, are likely to have their roots in much more ancient observation (and at the time when Christianity was being established, the Church often adapted popular local festivals to reflect its own milieu.)  May Eve and May Day, when the fairies or ‘wee folk’ were traditionally believed to be at their most powerful, is also part of the annual calendar of events.
