Famine Themed Visits

This workshop runs for two weeks in March and its theme is the novel ‘Under the Hawthorn Tree’ by Marita Conlon-McKenna. Students will take part in an interactive guided tour around some of the houses in the Rural Area of the Folk museum, comparing them to the conditions in which some of the characters, such as the O’Driscoll children and Mary Kate, may have lived.

Students will also have the opportunity to discuss various themes mentioned in the novel, such as emigration, alternative medicines and means of survival, and they will experience some of the tastes and smells of the time.
