Christmas Paper Crafting

Sunday 4th December 2016
Time: 11.00am – 1.00pm
Family groups work together to create a decoupage Christmas card, decorated wrapping paper and an origami gift box.

Christmas Peg Dolls

Sunday 4th December 2016
Time: 2.00pm – 4.00pm
Traditionally children would have used a dolly peg as the base to make a little figure which they then played with. The children would make clothes to suit their theme such as a soldier, an angel, a farmer or a ghost. Guided by our tutor, adults and children can work together to create such figures.

Celebrate International Women’s Day

Sunday 12th March 2017
Time: 10.00am – 3.30pm
Have a family day out and learn more about women’s everyday lives and the struggles they faced. Make a Make a Suffragette brooch, listen to extracts from the 1912 diaries of Florence Dick, all while learning more about women’s everyday lives and the struggles they faced. Hear from people in their homes and find out how they were affected by a lack of education, no real job opportunities and married life.
Fee: normal Museum entrance applies, no need to book in advance.

Be a ‘Smithy’ for the day

Sunday 5th March 2017 SOLD OUT
Time: 10.30am – 4.00pm
Experience what it was like to work in a blacksmith’s forge in the 19th century. The Museum’s ‘smithy’ will take you on as an apprentice for the day. All you need is a strong arm and plenty of gusto to operate the bellows!
Fee: Adults £32, Teenagers £17 includes materials

Due to Health & Safety concerns this class is only suitable for those aged 15 years+  and they MUST be accompanied all day by an adult.

Handloom Weaving

Saturday 25th March 2017
Time: 11.30am – 2.00pm
Working together you will learn how to weave strands of wool using a hand loom to create a bespoke piece of cloth. Your finished piece could be used to make a purse, used as a coaster or framed to hang on the wall.

Eggs Galore!

Sunday 9th April 2017
Time: 2.00pm – 4.00pm
Traditionally children would have used items from nature to dye hen’s eggs ready to trundle them down a nearby hill. Join us for an afternoon of egg dyeing and decorating before going to our Bleach Green to see how far your egg will trundle!

Garden Basket

Love gardening? An adult and child (aged 10 +) work together to make a simple willow garden
basket which can then be used in your own garden to collect leaves, litter or carry small plants.

Children of the Famine Tour

Sunday 14th May 2017
Time: 2.00pm – 4.00pm
Join our Education Officers as they lead you around the rural area of the Museum sharing what life was like for people during the worst year of the Famine in 1847. The tour is based on the children’s novel Under the Hawthorne Tree, participants will be able to meet some of the characters mentioned in the story.
