Major Dinosaur exhibition set to open at the Ulster Museum

Published: 30 April 2012

The largest and most interactive dinosaur exhibition ever to come to Northern Ireland is to go on show next month at the Ulster Museum.

Age-Dinosaur-Installation-Ulster-Museum-600.jpgAge of the Dinosaur includes 7 full-scale animatronic dinosaurs, over 60 unique specimens from the Natural History Museum, London, and many objects from the Ulster Museum’s own extensive collections.

The exhibition, being run in partnership with the Natural History Museum, will open at the Ulster Museum on Friday 18 May for a four month period. The Ulster Museum will open on Mondays during July and August to facilitate demand over the holiday period.

The announcement was made as two flying dinosaurs were hoisted into position at the Ulster Museum by specialist rigging team Unusual Rigging.

The Age of the Dinosaur exhibition will be accompanied by a dedicated, hands-on discovery zone – ‘Discover Dinosaurs’ – which includes interactive activities, build-a-dinosaur corner, a special ‘Dino Dig’ activity as well as an area for under 8s.

Director of Collections & Interpretation for National Museums Northern Ireland, Jim McGreevy, said the exhibition is a must-see, “There is an enduring fascination with dinosaurs. This exhibition will enable visitors to experience the sight, sounds and even smells of the worlds in which dinosaurs lived. It’s set to thrill and excite our visitors as 7 full-scale animatronic dinosaurs from leading robotics company Kokoro swing into action!

We are delighted to be partnering with the Natural History Museum to bring this fabulous exhibition to Northern Ireland. The Age of the Dinosaur exhibition and the interactive Discover Dinosaurs zone will deliver fun and engaging experiences backed up with collections from both the Natural History Museum and National Museums Northern Ireland.”

Jan English, from the Natural History Museum, London says, “Everyone loves dinosaurs, don’t they? And we are pleased that our dinosaur exhibition has successfully migrated from London to the Ulster Museum. Complete with sounds, scenery, and scientific specimens, Age of the Dinosaur gives you the chance to really experience the land of these giants – a must for any budding dinosaur expert, young or old.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of events including lectures, movies, puppet shows and walking tours.

The Age of the Dinosaur exhibition opens on Friday 18 May and will run until 16 September. Tickets and timeslots are available for booking online now. Family tickets (5 people with a maximum of 2 adults) are priced at £18.95, adults £6.95 and children and concessions £3.95.
